Description

Cromwell commissions a "collonell" in his New Model Army

English soldier and statesman (1599-1658) who led Parliamentary forces in the English Civil War, waged war against Scotland and Ireland and, in 1653, following the execution of Charles I, became Lord Protector of Great Britain, a position he held until his death in 1658. After a yearlong reign by his son, Richard, the British throne was restored (to Charles II) and Cromwell's body was exhumed and posthumously 'executed.' Vellum manuscript DS, signed “O. Cromwell,” one page, 11 x 7.75, March 1650. Oliver Cromwell appoints Richard Ashfield as "Collonell…under my command." Prominently signed at the conclusion in ink by Oliver Cromwell. In very good condition, with toning, staining, and overall heavy soiling, affecting some of the body of the text.

This March 1650 appointment dates to a pivotal moment in Oliver Cromwell’s military and political rise, shortly after the execution of King Charles I and the establishment of the English Commonwealth. Cromwell, then one of the most powerful commanders in the New Model Army, was preparing for campaigns to secure the new republican regime against royalist resistance in Ireland, Scotland, and within England itself.
