Description

Scarce document signed by "Alessandro Volta, Royal Professor at the University of Pavia"

Italian physicist (1745–1827) best known for his epochal investigations into the nature and uses of electricity, leading him to invent the battery; the unit denoting the potential difference or electromotive force was named the volt in his honor. Scarce ADS in Italian, signed “Alessandro Volta, Royal Professor at the University of Pavia,” one page, 7.25 x 5, July 5, 1799. Handwritten financial document, in part (translated): "I, the undersigned, have received seven hundred fifty lire from the most illustrious gentleman Count Don Andrea Lucini Passalacqua as the interest due from 25 December to 25 June just past on the capital of thirty thousand lire placed with the aforementioned count as a loan at 5 percent interest. That is, 750 lire. And I attest." In fine condition, with scattered light foxing.

As Royal Professor of Physics at the University of Pavia, Alessandro Volta held one of the most prestigious scientific posts in Lombardy, a position he occupied for decades while building his reputation as an experimental physicist and teacher. The title reflected both academic distinction and state patronage, placing Volta within the intellectual elite of late 18th-century Italy; from Pavia, he conducted the electrical research that culminated in his invention of the voltaic pile in 1799–1800.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
