The last Catholic monarch (1633–1701) to reign over the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, crowned in 1685. Manuscript DS, signed “James R,” one page, 7.5 x 11.5, May 31, 1686. Document "authorizing and empowering Captain John Consett, Commander of the New Berkeley Castle Frigett, or the Commander of the same for the time being, to aid and assist our East India Company within the limitts of their Charter, in making Warr upon the Mogull and such as shall assist him for obtaining satisfaction for the injuries and losses they have sustained from the said Mogull and his Officers." Neatly signed at the head in ink by King James II. In fine condition, with scattered light foxing.
This remarkable royal warrant dates to the opening phase of the Anglo-Mughal War of 1686–1690, also known as Child’s War, the East India Company’s disastrous attempt—backed by James II—to force commercial concessions from the Mughal Empire under Aurangzeb. By empowering the New Berkeley Castle to assist the Company “in making Warr upon the Mogull,” James II placed royal naval authority behind a private trading corporation’s conflict overseas, reflecting the increasingly militarized ambitions of English commerce in Asia. The campaign ultimately ended in humiliation for the Company, which was compelled to apologize, pay a heavy fine, and seek restoration of its trading privileges from Aurangzeb.
