Description

The inventory of the guillotine considers "the theory of head injuries by contrecoup"

French surgeon and physiologist (1723–1792) credited with designing a prototype of the guillotine, which was initially called the 'louisette.' ALS in French, signed “Louis,” one page, 6.5 x 8.5, March 19, 1766. Handwritten letter on traumatic head injuries, in part (translated): "I inform you that your work on contrecoup [injuries] may well not be lost, for following a long conversation I had yesterday with the President, I expect tomorrow to be able to approach the Company and induce it to reserve at least one of the two medals, in order to obtain a better memoir than the one which received the votes…In restating the subject to be addressed, I will change the wording, to avoid the ambiguity that justified the detail into which you entered. Instead of asking for 'the theory of contrecoup in head injuries,' I will say 'the theory of head injuries by contrecoup.' Please do me the favor of letting me know if this change meets with your approval." In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
