Czar of Russia (born 1796) who reigned from 1825 until his death in 1855. By crushing the Decembrist Uprising, he confirmed the autocracy of czarist rule, but disastrous losses in the Crimean War marked the collapse of his foreign and domestic policies. LS in Russian, signed “Nicholas,” one page, 8 x 10, September 27, 1832. Letter to a major general, in part (translated): "Upon inspecting the reserve division of the Grenadier Corps, and judging by the success of its formation, I am once again convinced of your truly excellent zeal, with which you carry out all the duties entrusted to you.
