Scarce LS in Latin, signed “Guglielmus R,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 12.25, October 12/22, 1699. Letter to Leopold Eberhard, Duke of Württemberg-Montbéliard, expressing sorrow at the loss of Leopold’s father, George II, Duke of Württemberg-Montbéliard. In part (translated): "Most Illustrious and Most Serene Prince, our very dear kinsman and friend: Our love and benevolence toward the Most Illustrious and Most Serene Prince Lord George, Duke of Württemberg and Teck, Count of Montbéliard, Lord of Heidenheim, your late father, was such that, having learned with certainty of his unexpected death through Your Serenity’s letter written on the second day of June, we cannot express a moderate grief. Yet that grief has been somewhat lightened by the fact that, although your most honored father has been taken from among the living, we understand that another distinguished ornament of that house has not been lacking. Therefore, with the same affection and zeal with which we have been accustomed to favor your parent and the House of Württemberg-Montbéliard, we shall not be reluctant, as occasion offers, to assist and favor Your Serenity and all your affairs—whether at the court of the Most Christian King, or elsewhere—whenever our aid and interposition may be requested." In good to very good condition, with edge chipping, and partial separation to the very fragile folds.
