ALS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, January 8, 1878. Addressed from Cambridge, a handwritten letter to an unidentified woman, in full: “I am sorry that I have nothing as yet unpublished, relating to the sea, which I can’t send you for your proposed volume. Nor have I time to write anything. In my books you will find more than you will want of such pieces. I will mention only ‘Sea Weed,’ the ‘Light House,’ and the ‘Fire of Drift-wood.’ I presume you are aware that there already exists a collection of sea-pieces, under the title of ‘Thalatta, a Book for the Sea-side.’ It was published in Boston by Ticknor & Fields in 1853. It is a good collection, but is without illustrations.” In fine condition, with some light toning to the last page from old mounting remnants on the back.
