Description

Scottish-American detective and founder (1819-1884) of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, known for his claim to have foiled an 1861 plot to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln. Unusual 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photograph of General George B. McClellan in uniform, signed and inscribed on the reverse in ink, "Major Duane, Army of the Potomac, with respects of Allan Pinkerton." In fine condition.

Pinkerton was infamously hired by McClellan to provide espionage service during the Civil War; his reports of troop numbers were often dramatically overstated, causing McClellan to consistently believe that he was drastically outnumbered by the Confederate forces he faced. McClellan's action in the face of what he believed were overwhelming odds were unduly cautious, causing him to avoid offensive actions almost completely in favor of siege warfare and taking a defensive posture.
