Description

Lovell writes to fellow astronaut Scott Carpenter on his lack of "UFO sightings in space,” surmising that he “couldn't think of a better time for a UFO to examine a spacecraft carefully than during the Gemini VII flight which, as you know, lasted two weeks"

TLS signed “Jim,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, December 12, 1972. Letter to Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter, in full: “You have touched upon an old subject when you mentioned UFO sightings in space. This question has been asked of me many times since I made that first space flight on Gemini VII. Although there are many people throughout the country who sincerely believe in UFO's, I have to honestly say that during my four flights into space, I have not seen or heard any phenomena that I could not explain. I couldn't think of a better time for a UFO to examine a spacecraft carefully than during the Gemini VII flight which, as you know, lasted two weeks. All of the visual information we gathered from that flight was readily explainable.

I don't believe that any of us in the space program believe that there are such things as UFO's, or that there is any intelligent life within the solar system. However, most of us believe that there must be a star like our sun that also has a planetary system and this planetary system must somehow support intelligent life as we know it. I hope this is sufficient information for Tim Good, and I hope he isn't too disappointed in my answer.

Congratulations on getting married. I hope your venture with the Sea Sciences Corporation is progressing satisfactorily, and I am wondering how your new business with the ‘good bugs’ is doing. I plan to leave NASA this spring and try my hand at business in the cold world outside of the government. If all goes well, perhaps I can keep the wolf from the door.” In very good to fine condition, with light overall wrinkling.
