Official unbound NASA manual entitled “Gemini Mission Rules, Gemini VIA,” approximately 142 pages, 8.5 x 11, signed on the front cover in black felt tip, “Eugene F. Kranz, ‘Flight,’” who adds, “Mission Rules were by my left hand when on the Flight Director Console.” Prepared by the Flight Control Division, the manual contains 15 sections, 13 of which contain tabs that are annotated in pencil by Kranz. These read: “General,” “Flt Plan,” “Pre Launch,” “Trajectory,” “Booster,” “ECS,” “Elect.,” “Sequential,” “G&N,” “ATT & Mnvr,” “Com//Inst,” “Aeromed,” and “Recovery.” The final untabbed sections are Mission Rules Summary and Mission Rules Annex (General).
An opening ‘Objectives’ section reads: “The prime objective of the Mission Rules is to identify equipment configuration for mission support and formulate a series of basic ground rules based upon systems analysis and mission planning considerations to provide for the safety of the flight crew, optimize chances for mission success, and provide guidelines to expedite the decision process. Having analyzed the conditions and malfunctions herein prior to their occurrence provides those personnel involved with pre-thought, pre-arranged, and pre-planned actions which are known by experience to be the best solution to the malfunction. These mission rules are based on the Gemini VI test objectives as outlined in the Gemini VI mission directive.”
An opening statement reads: “This edition of the mission rules is preliminary and will receive general distribution. These rules will be used during the upcoming Gemini VIA simulations and will receive an extensive evaluation. It is realized that revisions and changes will be made to these rules prior to launch day due to their use in the simulations. All requests for addition to the distribution list for these mission rules or for additional copies must be made in writing to the assistant director for flight operations.” An opening page bears Kranz’s facsimile signature inherent to the original copy. In fine condition, with some light creasing and edgewear.
