Description

Brass U.S. military eagle button attributed to the Battle of the Little Bighorn (Custer’s Last Stand), fought June 25–26, 1876, along the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory. The clash between U.S. Army forces and Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors ended in a decisive Native American victory and remains the most significant battle of the Great Sioux War of 1876. This accouterment, .75˝ in diameter, is attested as deriving from the uniform of a soldier or other equipment standard in the U.S. Seventh Cavalry. The reverse bears the backmark of "Horstmann, Bros." of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In fine, found condition.

Originates from the collection of Stephen B. Reed, the longest serving Mayor of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, whose term lasted from 1982 to 2010. This piece, part of Reed's collection assembled in the 1990s, was intended for inclusion in the National Museum of the Old West that was to be housed in the Pennsylvania State Capitol. In 2003, Reed announced his plans for the museum, but unfortunately, budgetary concerns prevented it from opening and necessitated the breaking up and selling of the collection.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
