"Extract from the minutes" of the Continental Congress, appointing naval agents for distribution of privateering prizes in 1776

Patriot leader (1729–1824) in Philadelphia during the American Revolution and the secretary of the Continental Congress (1774–1789) throughout its existence; Thomson was the only person to sign the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration alongside John Hancock. ADS, signed “Chas. Thomson, Secretary,” one page, 8 x 7.5, April 23, 1776. Handwritten "extract from the minutes" of Continental Congress, in full: "Resolved That captain John Bradford be appointed agent for prizes in the Colony of Massachusetts bay, Daniel Tillinghast in Rhode island, Nathaniel Shaw jun'r in Connecticut, Jacobus Vanzantz in New York, John Nixon and John Maxwell Nesbit in Pennsylvania, William Lux in Maryland, John Tazewell in Virginia, Cornelius Harnet for Wilmington, Richard Ellis for Newbern and Robert Smith for Edenton in North Carolina & John Langdon in New Hampshire with power to each to appoint one or more deputies if necessary." In very good to fine condition, with fold separations and areas of paper loss repaired and reinforced by professional silking to both sides.

In April 1776, the Continental Congress and Marine Committee appointed agents in various colonies to manage, appraise, and sell captured British ships and cargo. These agents, such as John Bradford in Boston, distributed the resulting prize money to privateers and naval crews.
