Description

Exceptionally rare limited edition “1/1” cel and drawing display commemorating the ‘Pilot episode’ of Family Guy, signed twice by the brain and voice behind the show, Seth MacFarlane

(20th Century Fox, ca. early 2000s) Limited edition cel with matching production drawing inspired by the 1999 pilot episode of the animated sitcom Family Guy, which both show the Griffin family in their kitchen, with Lois making coffee and her husband, Peter, lying on the table as Meg, Chris, Stewie, and Brian all attempt to have breakfast. The cel display, which is numbered 1/1, and the drawing are signed in felt tip and pencil by the show’s creator and main voice actor, Seth MacFarlane.

The cel images, which measure 2.25 x 5.25 (Lois) and 7.75 x 4.75 (Peter with kids and Brian), are placed on a matching color 16 x 9 print of the Griffin family's kitchen. The drawing is accomplished in graphite and colored pencil on untrimmed 15 x 9 animation paper bearing artist notations. The lower left of both pieces bear affixed golden labels from 20th Century Fox numbered "B1807" and "B3364." Double-matted and framed together to an overall size of 41.5 x 17.25. In overall fine condition.

Seth MacFarlane first developed the idea for Family Guy in 1995 while studying animation at the Rhode Island School of Design. As a student, he created a thesis film called The Life of Larry, followed by a sequel, Larry and Steve (1996), which aired on Cartoon Network. These early shorts – featuring a bumbling man and his talking dog – caught the attention of Fox executives, who saw potential for a television series.

Fox soon commissioned MacFarlane to expand the concept into a show, giving him a $50,000 budget to produce a 15-minute pitch pilot. Completed in May 1998, this demo introduced the Griffin family and laid the groundwork for the series’ tone and structure. A refined version of that material became the official pilot, which premiered on television in January 1999. While a portion of the original pitch circulated later on DVD, the full 15-minute demo remained largely unseen until it surfaced online in 2022.
