Description

TLS signed “D. K. Slayton,” one page, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, September 15, 1975. Letter to Bill A. Kern, in full: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest and concern during my recent hospitalization. I have now been released from the hospital, am feeling great, and the doctors indicate my recovery should be rapid and uneventful. I appreciate your thoughtfulness very much." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing and rippling.

The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project mission in July 1975 marked the first joint spaceflight between the United States and the Soviet Union. After successfully docking in orbit, the American Apollo spacecraft reentered and splashed down in the Pacific on July 24th. A late-entry thruster error flooded the cabin with toxic propellant fumes, exposing astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Deke Slayton. They experienced coughing, eye irritation, and breathing difficulties, and were hospitalized in Hawaii for two weeks with chemical pneumonia.
