Description

Gemini 4 Flown 1910 U.S. $2½ Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle from the collection of Command Pilot Jim McDivitt

Exceedingly rare flown 1910 U.S. $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle carried aboard Gemini 4 in Jim McDivitt's PPK from June 3-7, 1965. Condition is mint state. Accompanied by two certificates of authenticity signed by McDivitt, in part: "I certify that this 1910 $2.50 gold coin was flown in space aboard Gemini IV in 1965. It is from my personal collection and recently presented to Novaspace for dispersal to collectors of artifacts from the great 'space race' and the golden era of space exploration." The second letter notes that the coin flew with him as part of his PPK; also includes a photograph of McDivitt signing the second letter.

Struck in 1910, this $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle represents one of the most distinctive designs in American coinage, created by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt as part of the early-20th-century renaissance of U.S. coin design under President Theodore Roosevelt. Its innovative incuse relief—where the design is recessed into the surface rather than raised—set it apart from all prior U.S. coins and remains a favorite among collectors of classic American gold.

This example carries extraordinary historical significance: it was flown aboard Gemini 4 (June 3–7, 1965) in astronaut James McDivitt’s Personal Preference Kit (PPK). The four-day mission marked a major milestone in the Space Race and is best remembered for astronaut Ed White performing the first American spacewalk. A remarkable artifact uniting classic U.S. gold coinage with the golden era of human space exploration.
