Description

Rare crew-signed $2 bill carried on Apollo 16 for their PPK packer—the first to be offered at auction

Flown Series 1963 two-dollar bill, serial number A02317535A, carried on the Apollo 16 Command Module 'Casper,' signed on the portrait side in ballpoint by John Young, Ken Mattingly, and Charlie Duke. Encapsulated and graded by PMG as "Choice Uncirculated 64," with the label noting the provenance: "Ex. Bob Horne / Flown Aboard Apollo 16, 1972 / Jefferson Space Museum Collection."

Accompanied by signed letters of provenance from Apollo 16 LMP Charlie Duke and Boeing Crew Equipment Engineer Bob Horne. Duke writes, in part: "This is to certify that this $2 bill was flown to the moon aboard the Apollo 16 Command Module 'Casper.' This $2 bill, serial number A02317535A, was stored in the crew Personal Preference Kit, PPK(S/N 148). There it remained for our eleven day mission including five days orbiting the moon. This bill was taken by the crew for Bob Horne and returned to him after our return." Also includes an image of Duke posing with the flown bill.

Horne writes, in part: "During the Apollo Program, I was the Boeing Crew Equipment Engineer assigned to the Johnson Space Center Flight Crew Support Team and stationed at Kennedy Space Center. I assisted in the packing of the Apollo 9 PPKs, and, subsequently, I alone personally packed all the LM and CM PPK's for all of the remaining Apollo Missions…Bills flown on these missions were all carefully identified by serial number, and they were protected so they remained in uncirculated, crisp condition."

An exceedingly rare exemplar of moon-flown currency, this is the first paper money from Apollo 16 to be publicly offered at auction.
