Description

Mrs. Madison quotes a poem by Darwin's grandfather: "Shine with such lustre, as the Tear that breaks / For other's woe down Virtue's manly cheeks"

Handwritten poem by Dolley Madison, signed "D. P. Madison," one page, 7.25 x 4.25, dated 1838. Madison quotes a stanza from 'The Botanic Garden' by Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin. In full:

"No radiant pearl, which crested Fortune wears,
No gem that twinkling hangs from Beauty's ears,
Not the bright stars, which Night's blue arch adorn,
Nor rising suns that gild the vernal morn—
Shine with such lustre, as the Tear that breaks
For other's woe down Virtue's manly cheeks."

In fine condition, with one small stain at the bottom edge.
