Description

Five years after the 'Midnight Ride,' William Dawes supplies the Revolution: a 1780 rations certificate for New Hampshire recruits bound for "Gen'l Poor’s Brigade"

American soldier (1745–1799) who famously rode with Paul Revere on the night of April 18, 1775, to alert Massachusetts minutemen of the approach of British regulars prior to the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Revolutionary War–dated ADS, signed “Wm. Dawes,” one page, 8 x 3.25, July 9, 1780. Handwritten military document issued while serving as a quartermaster for the Continental Army in Worcester, Massachusetts. In full: "This Certifies John Smith with Eight Men New Hampshire Recruits on their way to join Gen'l Poor's Brigade have been Victualed up to & Encluding the Eleventh Instant." Affixed to a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition, with some light soiling.

This war-dated certificate reflects the everyday logistics behind the Continental Army, documenting rations issued to John Smith and eight New Hampshire recruits as they traveled to join “Gen’l Poor’s Brigade”—the command of Brigadier General Enoch Poor, the respected New Hampshire officer who had served at Saratoga, Valley Forge, and Monmouth. Poor had earned Washington's confidence through steady service at some of the war's most demanding engagements and by 1780 commanded one of the Continental Army's most battle-tested New Hampshire brigades.

Dawes signed comparatively little of historical consequence, and Revolutionary War–dated documents bearing his autograph are extremely rare.
