Description

Paul Revere signs a receipt for Boston merchant John Templeman, patron of his famed silver shop

American patriot and silversmith (1735–1818) whose 1775 'midnight ride' to warn of an impending British invasion later became one of the most celebrated incidents of the Revolutionary War. ADS, signed “Paul Revere,” one page, 6.25 x 4, September 1, 1792. Handwritten document, in full: "Received of Mr. John Templeman one pound four shillings in full of all demands to this day." In fine condition.

This 1792 receipt dates to Paul Revere’s post-Revolutionary career, when he resumed work as a silversmith and expanded into increasingly ambitious industrial ventures. As a respected Boston craftsman and manufacturer, Revere pioneered copper plating and copper spikes for shipbuilding, casting church bells and bronze cannon, and establishing major copper-rolling works in Canton, Massachusetts.

Here, he receives payment from John Templeman, a wealthy Boston merchant and important patron of Revere’s silver shop. Templeman and his wife, Mehitable, were loyal customers who commissioned numerous household objects from Revere, including a 1792–93 silver tea service now held by the Minneapolis Institute of Art. As a routine acknowledgment of payment, the document offers a tangible link between Revere’s everyday commercial dealings and the elite Boston clientele who helped sustain his reputation as one of early America’s foremost silversmiths.
