Description

Three original late 19th- and early 20th-century ‘Wanted’ posters from American law enforcement and detective agencies, offering rewards for fugitives accused of embezzlement, abduction, and grand larceny. The lot includes:

Harry N. Morse Detective Service and Patrol System poster, 8.5 x 14, offering a $500 reward for the arrest of William Thomas Bunney, who, as treasurer of Inyo County, “embezzled county funds to the extent of several thousand dollars.” Issued by Inyo County Sheriff Charles A. Collins and the above-mentioned San Francisco detective agency on August 20, 1903. The upper corner is marked as “2nd issue.”

The next two posters are affixed to the front and back of the same 9.25 x 11.5 sheet:

Detroit Police Department poster, 8.5 x 11, issued for the arrest of Thomas Kennedy, “Wanted for Conspiracy to Abduct and Rob,” issued by C. C. Starkweather, the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Detroit, Michigan, on September 29, 1891, which notes: “On August 12th last, Thomas Kennedy, with others, was arrested for abducting Joseph Perrien, on March 19th, 1891. During the progress of the examination in our Police Court, on September 24th Kennedy jumped his bail.”

Thiel’s Detective Service poster, 8 x 10.5, issuing a $1000 reward for the apprehension of Sylvester Young, “late Cashier Newport News and Mississippi Valley, Co., who fled from Louisville, Kentucky, July 31, 1891. Arrest for grand larceny.” Poster notes that all communications should be addressed to “Jno. Echols” of the Newport News and Mississippi Valley, Co., or the above agency.

In overall very good to fine condition, with wrinkling and light staining to the Kennedy poster.
