Description

Historic pairing of cabinet photos of the imprisoned Younger brothers

Historic pairing of original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photos of outlaw brothers Jim Younger and Bob Younger, taken in 1889 while they were imprisoned at Minnesota State Prison in Stillwater by local photographer John M. Kuhn, identified on the studio mounts with contemporary ink notations in an unknown hand. The reverse of Jim's portrait is imprinted "Copyright, 1889, Henrietta Younger," and bears a clipped ink signature, "Jim Younger," affixed below; the reverse of Bob's portrait is stamped, "Copyrighted, 1889, By Henrietta Younger." In overall very good condition, with a stain to Jim's image, an tack holes and associated corner loss to both.

Provenance: collection of Harry Hoffman, an affiliate of the Jesse James family and close friend of Cole Younger; sold to Frank Foster in 1948; acquired by Wilbur Zink in the 1970s; sold at Heritage Auctions, June 22, 2013.

In 1889, Henrietta 'Retta' Younger traveled from Missouri to Minnesota to seek the release of her older brothers. Although unsuccessful, she was allowed to bring them new suits of clothes and have a photographer take their portraits—simple comforts that meant a great deal during their time in prison. Bob Younger would die of tuberculosis in prison on September 16, 1889; Jim would finally be paroled on July 10, 1901.
