Description

Scarce Civil War-era CDV of Frederick W. Benteen, signed as commander of the 10th Missouri Cavalry

Military officer (1834–1898) who first fought during the American Civil War and later commanded soldiers during the Indian Campaigns and Great Sioux War against the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne. Benteen is best known for being in command of a battalion of the 7th U. S. Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in late June 1876. Scarce Civil War–dated 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Benteen in uniform, boldly signed on the reverse in ink, "F. W. Benteen, Lt. Col., 10th Cavalry Mo. Vols., May 17th, 1864." In fine condition, with three small pieces of archival tape on the back.

Benteen joined the Union Army on September 1, 1861, as a first lieutenant in the 1st Missouri Cavalry Regiment, which later merged with the 10th. He participated in numerous battles throughout the Trans-Mississippi and Western Theaters, including Wilson's Creek, Pea Ridge, Vicksburg, and Westport, earning a reputation for steady and reliable leadership. On February 27, 1864, Benteen was promoted to lieutenant colonel and commander of the 10th Missouri Cavalry. A remarkably early example, and the very first signed photograph of Benteen that we have offered.
