Description

"Chief of the notorious Band of Arizona Apache Indians, now a prisoner of war at Ft. Sill"

Sharp original 5.25 x 7.25 cabinet-style photo of legendary Apache warrior Geronimo, showing him dressed in fringed buckskin and a full feathered war bonnet while brandishing a rare Texas-made Dance revolver, taken by William Irwin circa 1899. Imprinted on the studio mount, "Irwin, Chickasha, Ind. Ter.," and annotated on the reverse in pencil: "Geronimo, Chief of the notorious Band of Arizona Apache Indians, now a prisoner of war at Ft. Sill." In fine condition, with a modern provenance label from the "Volkmar Wentzel Collection" affixed on the reverse. A remarkable portrait of the Apache icon.
