Description

"I don't care what my business may be or how much money there may be in my being away from you I will never again be so long away from you until the monster death seperates us"

New Mexico lawman (1850–1908) famed for killing his former gambling partner, the fabled outlaw Billy the Kid, in 1881. Two ALSs, signed "Pat" and "P. F. Garrett," totaling three pages on two sheets, 6 x 9.5, The Grand Central letterhead, August 4 and 6, 1889, both addressed to his wife. The first, in full: "I have to wait here until tomorrow for Mr. [Charles] Eddy. He is to be here then I am compel to see him on some business if I go home without seeing him I would be compel to make a trip to his place soon so think it best to see him before I leave here but it is hard work for me to wait. I never wanted to see you and the children as bull as I do now it seems that it has been a year since I saw you if I get away from here Tuesday I will get home Friday or Saturday I don't want to ever be away from you this long again while we live."

The second, in full: "I wrote you yesterday morning that I expected to leave here to day thought sure Mr. Eddy would have been here yesterday, and we could have gotten through our business so as to have started out to day, but he did not come. However I look for him sure today and we will get through with our business and start home tomorrow. If I can get off tomorrow I will be home Saturday night I give you my word that this is the last time that I will ever be away from you if you knew how I want to see you I know you would be sorry for me. I don't care what my business may be or how much money there may be in my being away from you I will never again be so long away from you until the monster death seperates us. It seemes to me I can see you worrying and looking for me. Be pacient my Angel this is the last time." In overall very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining and creasing.

Four years before these letters were written, Pat Garrett embarked on an ambitious irrigation venture in the Pecos Valley. He proposed damming the Hondo River and channeling its waters through a network of canals across west Texas and southern New Mexico, envisioning that the primary profits would come not from land sales but from water rights. To advance the project, Garrett enlisted the financial backing of New Mexico cattleman Charles Eddy, and, with assistance from his former publisher Charles Greene, helped establish the Pecos Valley Irrigation and Investment Company. Although the company was formally incorporated in 1888, the enterprise ultimately proved unsuccessful.
