Old West outlaw (1844–1916) associated with Jesse James as a leader of the James-Younger Gang, who eventually turned from a life of crime to Wild West shows and public speaking. ALS signed twice, "Cole Younger" and "Cole," one page, 5.5 x 8.75, no date but circa 1898. Handwritten discussion of the infamous guerilla leader William C. Quantrill—under whom the Younger and James brothers served during the Civil War—and his means of getting information about the movements of Federal troops. In full: “Now as to Quantrill all men high in athority know he was a regular comishion officer Capt. of Partizen rangers same as Mosby of Va. and was kept in Mo. so as to provide ways & means for recruting officers of the C.S.A. to get a cross the Mo. Rivers. And to colect news in regard to the movements of the northern army. He Quantrill, did so by keeping skiffs hid at different points on the river an got the News by having spies in differrent parts of the state and having citizens subscribe for the leading papers through out the north and Eastern states and cliping out all information in regard to the movements of the union army and sending it south by courer or scout to Gen. Price, Marmaduke or Shelby."

At the top, Younger writes another note in ink, signed with his first name only: "I sent Judge Norton and Judge Brown each one of your cards so they will know who you are when you write." Younger's notes are written on the reverse of a letter sent to him by Nimrod L. Norton (1830-1903), who was himself a former Confederate colonel and member of the Confederate House of Representatives. Norton's letter, in part: "I send by this mail under separate cover a copy of the Dollar News with your Letter in full…I am very much gratified…there able to do you & Jim a little act of justice." In fine condition, with one short fold split.
