Description

"The Indians have been trying for some time to strike at our frontier but my Rangers have made many of them pay for their curiosity"

Politician and military officer (1760–1814) who succeeded Meriwether Lewis as governor of the Louisiana Territory from 1810 to 1812. ALS signed “B. Howard,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, May 13, 1812. Handwritten letter to Robert Wickliff in Lexington, Kentucky, in part: "Since I wrote you last I have been confined to my bed with indisposition for 12 or 15 days. I am now well but still weak. My God, what work they have had at Vincennes from accounts. I have been at least fortunate in my measures for the defence of this Country (the Indians have been trying for some time to strike at our frontier but my Rangers have made many of them pay for their curiosity, and have run others…for their lives; the small means which I have for defence are operating with much life and activity). I wish you to have that part of my last letter to you published which relates to Indian matters and my arrangement here for defence. You may publish that part of this…in parenthesis.

I am transported at hearing of my mother's recovery. I hope you have another fine fine son by this time. You will be the world's wonder I expect for making money and children—two things that ought always to go together. Do write me what they think of our situation here in your country. What do they say about Hon. since the murders of Vincennes. I write in much pain from a large blister on my side not yet well. Tell my friend Warfield that Doctr. P. has paid me no money yet. I [asked] about it some time ago by private conveyance which I fear he has not recd. Write me about my suit, whether any thing is wanting I can produce; my love to Mrs. W. and Sally. Tell Sally she must write to me soon, that the little girls here of her size write and speak French too." In very good condition, with a split horizontal fold to the first page, scattered small stains, and some ink erosion affecting the crossed-out words of text.
