Description

Manuscript DS, signed “Z. Taylor, Col., 1st Reg't U.S.I., Comd'g,” one page, 7.25 x 12.25, September 1832. Accounting record signed at Fort Crawford, issued to "the estate of R. Graham, deceased," amounting to $7.50 for "advertising…for four weeks successively ‘a reward of fort five Doll's for three soldiers who deserted from the Army…William Robinson, Stephen Burnett and Jeremiah Maine…advertising Matthew Beckett the murderer of Sgt. John Coffin…fifteen Doll's reward." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by Zachary Taylor as Fort Crawford's commander, certifying the account as accurate and approved by his order. In fine condition.

Taylor was promoted to colonel of the 1st Infantry Regiment in April 1832 as the Black Hawk War began in the West. It was initiated when Sauk leader Black Hawk crossed the Mississippi River with a group of allies, seemingly hoping to reclaim land taken over by the United States in the disputed 1804 Treaty of St. Louis. Fighting came to a head in late August when Chief Black Hawk surrendered to Col. Taylor at Fort Crawford.
