Description

Orville Wright arranges the preservation of a historic aeronautical artifact—"the motor used at Kitty Hawk in 1903"

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, The Wright Company letterhead, October 26, 1914. Letter to Henry Woodhouse of the Aero Club of America, in full: "Eight or nine years ago we sent to the Aero Club of America the crank and fly wheel of the motor used at Kitty Hawk in 1903. As we have practically all of the other parts of the motor, only a part of the crank case being gone I believe, I would like to get the crank again, so that all of the parts can be kept together and assembled at some future time. Will you please see whether the Club still has this crank?" In fine condition.

Written just eleven years after the historic first flight at Kitty Hawk, this 1914 letter finds Orville Wright seeking to reunite a key surviving component of the original 1903 Wright Flyer engine—the crank and flywheel—with the rest of the motor parts in his possession. Addressed to pioneering aviation writer and publisher Henry Woodhouse, Wright expresses his desire to recover the crank so that the engine might one day be fully reassembled, reflecting his early awareness of the aircraft’s historic importance. A remarkable piece, directly referencing hardware from the first powered airplane.
