Queen of England and Ireland from 1553 until her death, whose brutal persecution of Protestants earned her the nickname 'Bloody Mary' (1516–1558). Partial manuscript LS in Latin, signed “Maria,” one page, 10.25 x 4, March 2, 1554. Two concluding lines of a state letter, written in the hand of Mary's Latin secretary Roger Ascham, signed below the closing sentiment in ink by Queen Mary I. Also signed in the lower right corner by Ascham, "R. Aschamus." In fine condition, with a mounting trip to the top edge, and the reverse carrying a small, purple, circular stamp with an "M" surmounted by a crown.
Roger Ascham (c. 1515–1568) was a celebrated English Renaissance scholar, educator, and didactic writer best known for championing humanist learning, his promotion of the vernacular, and his service as tutor in Greek and Latin to the young Princess Elizabeth before she became Queen Elizabeth I. He also held important scholarly and court positions under the Tudor monarchs Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I.
