Important American inventor (1765–1825) remembered for developing the cotton gin, revolutionizing agriculture in the American South. ALS signed "E. Whitney," one page both sides, 8 x 9.5, March 12, 1810. Handwritten letter to a business associate, in which Whitney discusses financial matters in his merchant trade. In small part: "I shall transmit to Oliver Wolcott Esq., New York. My draft in his favor on you. Blank or to the sum, with directions to him to fill up the blank with the sum $736 with interest on the same." Whitney goes on to reveal: "People in this quarter are perfectly mad about Marino sheep—I was last evening enquired of if those that were purchased for you could be repurchased & was told by one of the shrewdest & most wealthy merchants in this place that if I would obtain them back from you he would pay me 2000 Dollars cash for the two full bloods or 2500 Dollars for the lot & I have not the least doubt but 3500 Dollars may be obtained for your little flock within 60 days of this time." In fine condition.
