Description

"I will not speak of politics because there is really nothing new to say, although the outlook is still very bleak"

Emperor of Russia until his assassination in 1881 (born 1818), who also served as the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Finland; became known as Alexander the Liberator for his emancipation of Russia's serfs in 1861. ALS in French, signed “Alexandre,” one page, 5 x 7.75, May 18/30, 1861. Handwritten letter to his "Uncle," in part (translated): ""I am taking advantage of P. d'Adelsberg's return to his post in order to thank you for your letter, brought to me by Professor Wagan. I hope that our museum at the Hermitage satisfied his love of fine arts. Everyone who met him here thought he was charming.

Yesterday we arrived here in Moscow where we plan to stay for three or four weeks. We were here in the summer while in Petersburg spring had scarcely begun. This time I will not speak of politics because there is really nothing new to say, although the outlook is still very bleak.

You must certainly have shared my sorrow at the loss of P. Gortchakov of Warsaw. He was one of those chivalrous beings whom we unfortunately rarely see in these times. His replacement puts me in a predicament, especially just now when things are so far from being calm in Poland. May God give me the perseverance and the steadfastness to succeed in this endeavor." In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
