Description

"This is a direct appeal to you that is made with the hope of turning the tide of racial destiny at this particular time"

Political leader and publisher (1887-1940) who was a staunch proponent of the black nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements. TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, Universal Negro Improvement Association letterhead, March 1935. Fundraising letter, in part: "This is a direct appeal to you that is made with the hope of turning the tide of racial destiny at this particular time. You will not deny that our Organisation the Universal Negro Improvement Association at one period of our race's history, created a world opinion that forced the Negro to the point of racial consciousness from which he has benefited universally.

We are now to make the second grand move toward our racial destiny, and so the appeal is here made to you for immediate financial assistance. The International Headquarters of the U.N.I.A. have been removed to London, England, from where the new programme of universal advancement for the race will be launched to reach every section of the world. The experiences we have had in the past shall be guides to us to now completely carry through the grand and glorious aims of the Organization for the purpose of Negro uplift.

Funds are urgently needed for the establishment and financing of the new Headquarters, so we are asking you, through this letter list, to give us immediately a donation. The help that you will give may be just that which will help to turn the tide. You can imagine, therefore, the blessing that will follow such an act consciously or unconsciously. This is a kind of last minute call. We do not expect you to fail us. The holder of this list is collecting for us and will forward to us immediately the amount you contribute. It may be $10, $5, $3, $2 or $1, but whatsoever it be, let it be a self denial for a good and noble cause. Write down the amount on the attached list with your address so that a record can be kept showing that you did your part at this very crucial crisis to send the great cause onward." In fine condition, with a short fold split, and minor tear to the lower right corner. Accompanied by a blank donation form, return envelope, and fragment of the original mailing envelope.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
