Description

American banker (1870-1949) who founded the Bank of Italy, later Bank of America. A pioneer of modern banking, he expanded financial services to immigrants, small business owners, and middle-class Americans, helping transform banking from an elite service into a widely accessible institution. ADS, signed “A. P. Giannini, Secretary,” one page, 8.25 x 13.75, October 4, 1904. Entirely handwritten meeting minutes for the Board of Directors of the Bank of San Mateo, penned by Amadeo P. Giannini. The manuscript records a regular meeting of the bank's board, noting attendance by directors including Giannini himself and summarizing routine banking business. In part: “The regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the San Mateo Bank was held at its offices in San Mateo…President Fagan occupied the chair and called the meeting to order…The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The Cashier’s report was read and approved. The Loans made since the last regular meeting were upon motion, duly seconded, approved; No further business appearing, the meeting adjourned.” Signed at the conclusion by Giannini. In fine condition.

This manuscript originates from the earliest period of Giannini’s banking career. Written on October 4, 1904, less than two weeks before he founded the Bank of Italy in San Francisco, it documents his service as secretary and a principal stockholder of the Bank of San Mateo. The Bank of Italy would acquire the Bank of San Mateo in 1912 as Giannini expanded his banking network throughout California. An early banking manuscript connecting Giannini’s local financial interests to the beginnings of the institution that would become Bank of America.
