Description

French politician and philosopher (1809-1865) who was the first to describe himself as an anarchist. ALS in French, signed “P.-J. Proudhon,” one page, 5.5 x 8, no date but circa June–July 1848. Handwritten letter to a friend, aiming to secure money to pay the printer Proux. Proudhon presents his views on the present state of French politics, on the Société de Gringole, on the worthlessness of the Montagnards, and on Louis Blanc. He begs his correspondent (translated): "Meet me in my new capacity as representative, which gives me more unease than satisfaction. I mourn for my little newspaper." In very good to fine condition, with faint staining, an old mounting strip along the back left edge, and ink erosion affecting one word of text.

The 1848 Revolution had begun in February, when Proudhon had just accepted the editorship of the newspaper Representant du Peuple. It was probably due to the articles he published there that he was elected, on June 4th, to the Constituent Assembly by 77,000 voters.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
