Description

"I just hope the seriousness of this little ailment doesn’t grow with me or I shall be dead quite soon"—handwritten school essay by JFK, Jr. on being accident prone

Autograph manuscript signed “John Kennedy, English,” comprised of a three-page handwritten English composition written by Kennedy as a student at the Collegiate School in New York City, circa 1974-1975. The essay, penned in blue ink on 8.5 x 11 notebook paper, is signed at the top of the first page in pencil by a 14 or 15-year-old Kennedy, who writes, in full (spelling and grammar retained): “I think my life up to this point is or was most probably a domestic comedy. It all [began] when I was born, I was not given the great gift of coordination, in other words I’m accident prone. I cant really begin to name all the accidents this little deficieny has gotten me into; from falling off trees to falling of a cliff.

It all started out 7 years ago on a campout. I was walking backwards talking to someone, I tripped on some stones around a still burning campfire and was burned like hell on my rear end and hand. I have the scars to prove it. At 8 years old while sitting on the back of a bycycle bare foot and going down a steep hill I absent mindedly put my foot in the spokes and ripped my foot up. I also have scars to prove this.

Just this year I had the worst accident I’ve had and hope to ever have. Fortunately I escaped major injuries with just a few scrapes. I was rock climbing and thought I saw a foothole wich obviously wasn’t there, so I put my foot in this non exsisting foothold and fell backwards down the side of the cliff for about 40 feet down towards the rock bottom. But I fortunatly fell in a 4 foot long 5 inch deep puddle wich broke my fall 6 inches farther out and I would have splattered.

I could go on for pages about accidents but I’ll spare the reader the pleasure. I just hope the seriousness of this little ailment doesn’t grow with me or I shall be dead quite soon.” Kennedy attempts to spell ‘exist’ three times on the last page, and ‘bicycle’ on the reverse of the second page. All three pages bear red ink correction marks from his teacher, who gave Kennedy a score of 79. In fine condition. An amusing if not poignant handwritten essay from JFK, Jr., who, at the age of 38, did indeed perish in an accident when he, his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette, died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
