Description

Two TLSs signed “Yours sincerely, Mountbatten of Burma” and “Yours ever, Mountbatten of Burma,” both one page, 7 x 9 and 8 x 11.75, personal letterhead and Chief of the Defense Staff letterhead, dated to 1962 and 1976. The earlier letter, June 29, 1962, sent to British theatrical impresario Harold Fielding, reads: “Although I have no standing in the Edwina Mountbatten Trust, I feel I must write to you on behalf of our family to say "Thank you very much indeed" for all your kindness and generosity over the Royal Gala Performance of ‘Sail Away.’ Many of my wife's greatest friends were in the audience, and it was just the sort of evening she would have enjoyed most of all. At supper afterwards at Buckingham Palace, both Her Majesty and His Royal Highness were saying how very much they had enjoyed the whole evening, and what a wonderful show it was.” The second letter, September 30, 1976, sent to “Frank,” in part: “I have immediately written to my old friend, Lord Longford, who is the Chairman of Sidgwick and Jackson. As Lord Pakenham he was First Lord of the Admiralty when I was Fourth Sea Lord, so I can't help feeling he has a vested interest in Defence Reorganisation and I hope my note will help.” Mountbatten has added both salutations in his own hand. In overall fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
