Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian, and Nobel laureate (1861–1930) who led the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888. TLS, one page, 8.75 x 11.25, personal letterhead, June 22, 1923. Letter to F. H. Hooper of the Encyclopedia Britannica, in part: "I would have given me much pleasure, if possible, to write the article on 'Scandinavia' which you kindly ask me to do. But unfortunately my qualifications for such a task are too poor. I know too little about the subject, and it would take me much time to study the questions involved, and being extremely busy at present with other work this is not possible. I therefore deeply regret to be obliged to tell you that I cannot accept your kind offer." In fine condition, with a couple of tiny edge tears.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
