Description

Italian Pope (1881-1963), born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who ascended the papal throne in 1958 and served until his death. As the guiding force behind the historic Second Vatican Council, John ushered in the most sweeping reforms the Catholic Church had undergone in centuries. TLS in Italian, signed “Angelo Gius. card. Roncalli,” one page, 5.5 x 4.25, Il Cardinale Patriarca di Venezia letterhead, July 25, 1958. Letter of thanks, in full (translated): "I will be very grateful to Monsignor Ferrero for the courtesy of thanking the relatives of the late Mr. Puggiotto, whose biographical profile I appreciated on the anniversary of his painful passing. The dear and well-deserving Monsignor is always present to me, from the first day that I found him at my side on my entry into Venice: and I pray for him, and I am grateful to him for all the good done to the diocese, to the Navy, and to the good people of Castello. Most devoted and blessing." In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
