Description

Born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini in Italy in 1897, Paul VI reigned as pope from 1963 until his death in 1978. TLS in Italian, signed “G. B. Montini, Arciv.,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, Archdiocese of Milan letterhead, February 21, 1957. Addressed from Milan and marked ‘Private,’ a letter to Pasquale Tempesta, the Inspector General of Public Security at the Vatican, in full (translated): “My Secretary, who knows Dr. Marcello Monarca, secretary to the Chief of Police of Milan, very well, asks me to present to you the enclosed memorandum concerning the person indicated. I know that what is requested in the memorandum is a very delicate matter, for which reason I allow myself only to address a simple request for your consideration in whatever way you deem most appropriate.” In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
