Description

Born Barnaba Niccolò Maria Luigi Chiaramonti in 1742, he served as Pope from 1800 until his death in 1823; he was taken prisoner and transported to France in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars, remaining there until 1814. After the French were defeated, he was permitted to return to Rome, where he was greeted warmly as a hero and defender of the faith. LS in Italian, signed “Card. Chiaramonti,” one page, 7.5 x 10.75, December 1786. Addressed from Imola, a letter to an unknown recipient, in part (loosely translated): “The favors which Your Most Illustrious Lordship was pleased to grant me on the occasion of the recent holy Christmas continually inspire me with affection for your singular kindness and goodness, which I hold most dear. In responding therefore to the same, not only do I offer my heartfelt thanks, but I also implore Heaven to grant Your Most Illustrious Lordship every perfect happiness.” Signed in the lower right corner by the future Pope Pius VII in his holy positions as Bishop of Imola and Cardinal Priest of San Callisto. In very good to fine condition, with irregularly trimmed edges.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
