Description

World War II-dated TLS signed “H. H. Arnold,” one page, 7 x 9, Headquarters, Army Air Forces (Office of the Commanding General) letterhead, October 17, 1944. Letter to William M. Hess, in full: "With greatest regret I have learned of the untimely death of your son, First Lieutenant Robert Dale Hess, which occurred in a hospital in India on September 11, 1944, as a result of injuries he received while flying in the service of his Country. In his cadet record, which has been called to my attention, I find that Lieutenant Hess applied himself with diligence to both academic work and flying assignments at Foster Field. As a pilot he was praised by superiors for the courage and skill he demonstrated in performing duties, and with his passing we have suffered the loss of a fine officer who was determined to give his best to the Army Air Forces. I hope you will be comforted by the memory of your son's enviable military reputation and the fact that he died for our cause. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to you and other members of the family.” In fine condition.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
