Description

World War II-era ALS signed “W. F. Halsey,” one page, 6 x 10, United States Navy letterhead, no date [circa early 1944]. Handwritten letter to Major General Robert S. Beightler, in full: “My warmest appreciation + admiration for your splendidly successful handling of your magnificent 37th Division in New Georgia + Bougainville. Keep the rats dying. Good luck and a hearty ‘Well Done.’” In fine condition.

Major General Robert S. Beightler commanded the 37th Infantry Division (Ohio National Guard) throughout World War II, a rare distinction. Under his leadership, the division played a key role in the Pacific campaigns at New Georgia and Bougainville, fighting in difficult jungle conditions to defeat entrenched Japanese forces and secure strategic ground. His effectiveness in these operations earned praise from Admiral William F. Halsey, commander of the South Pacific Area, who commended the “splendidly successful handling” of the division.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
