King of Prussia, known as the 'Soldier King' (1688–1740), who did much to improve Prussia economically and militarily; father of Frederick the Great. LS in German, signed “Fr. Wilhelm,” one page, 7.5 x 9.25, March 18, 1738. Addressed from Potsdam, a letter to Professor Hoffman acknowledging receipt of the announcement of the death of Professor Michaelis. In very good condition, with somewhat irregular overall toning and spotting.
The recipient is likely Friedrich Hoffmann (1660-1742), a prominent German physician, chemist, and professor at the University of Halle, widely regarded as one of the leading medical authorities of his time. The mentioned Professor Michaelis is likely Christian Benedikt Michaelis (1680-1738), a German theologian and Orientalist at the University of Halle, known for his scholarship in biblical and Eastern languages.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
