Description

French civil servant, soldier, and Member of Parliament (1877-1932), most notably remembered for the formation of the Maginot Line after WWI, which comprised a series of permanent concrete forts and field positions along France's border with Germany. ALS in French, signed “Maginot,” one black-bordered page, 4 x 3.25, Chamber of Deputies stationery card, January 5, [1927]. Handwritten letter to a friend, pertaining to Maginot’s 1927 bid to win the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies, which he lost to Fernand Bouisson on January 11th. In part (translated): “It is possible that I will be a candidate to the presidency of the Chamber on the 11th, provided that all my friends are present. You are one of them: I take the liberty of counting on you.” In fine condition.

Maginot began his political career in the Chamber of Deputies in 1910. Recognized for his valor while stationed at the front in his native Lorraine during World War I, Maginot returned to politics after the war, and, as minister of war from 1922-1924, advocated for increased spending to defend France, arguing that the Treaty of Versailles did not offer adequate protection against the possibility of future German aggression.

With the Senate and Chamber of Deputies' agreement on a budget on April 29, 1926, Maginot finally obtained government funding to construct a series of fortifications, which came to be known as the Maginot Line, comprising mostly concrete structures impervious to aerial attacks. The Maginot Line, however, failed to prevent Germany’s 1940 invasion of France, as the Wehrmacht circumvented it to the north and invaded France through the Ardennes Forest and the Low Countries.
