Description

World War II-dated TLS signed “G. C. Marshall,” one page, 7 x 9, War Department, Office of the Chief of Staff letterhead, December 7, 1940. Letter to journalist Fred Lockley, in full: “I have received the Franklin coin sent with your letter of the 5th, and want you to know I appreciate your remembering me in this way. I shall carry the coin in my pocket as you suggest and hope the charm will work when the pressure becomes too heavy. I was glad to have had the short talk with you the other day, and hope I may have the pleasure of meeting you again. With my thanks for your letter and your complimentary references to me.” In fine condition.

Fred Lockley (1871-1958) was an American journalist known for his widely syndicated Oregon Journal column, 'Impressions and Observations of a Journal Man.' A prolific writer and interviewer, he chronicled the American West through conversations with pioneers, laborers, and notable figures, including Thomas Edison, Booker T. Washington, and Jack London.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
