Description

American educator (1900–1970) who defied state law in Tennessee by teaching the theory of evolution, precipitating the famous 'Monkey Trial' trial in 1925. He was convicted and received a nominal fine, but the decision was ultimately reversed on a technicality. ALS, one page, 5.75 x 6.75, April 29, 1967. Handwritten letter to Miss Oppenheimer, in full: "I am returning the copy of your review of 'Center of the Storm.' Thanks for the very nice things you chose to say. I really enjoyed my trip to Garland and meeting so many intelligent friendly people. I especially appreciated the honor of joining you in the program. I hope our paths will cross again." In fine condition, with toning to the left edge.

Published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston in 1967, Center of the Storm: Memoirs of John T. Scopes, written with James Presley, is the autobiography of the young teacher at the center of the 1925 Scopes “monkey trial.” It recounts his role in challenging Tennessee’s ban on teaching evolution, the sensational trial featuring Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan, his conviction for violating the Butler Act (later overturned), and his later life after leaving teaching for a career in geology and the oil industry.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
