Description

Emperor of Russia (born 1754) from 1796 until his assassination in 1801, the son of Catherine the Great, and a champion of the poorer classes, his sweeping reforms alienated the Russian nobility and were thought to have provided a prime motivation for the conspiracy that led to his brutal death. Uncommon ALS in French, signed “Paul,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 7.75, November 18/29, 1778. Handwritten letter to a lady who had asked him to intercede on her behalf on some matter; apparently, the gentleman who was to be approached had never accepted any offer on the part of the emperor-to-be and had concluded by saying that he was very busy, that pressing affairs had called him home, and it was therefore not possible for him to enter her service. In very good to fine condition, with dampstaining affecting only appearance.

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
