TLS signed “Ray,” one page, 6 x 9.75, personal letterhead, June 3, 1957. Letter to Michael Gilbert, in full: "The British Information Services in New York have been very friendly to me, and they have sent me a number of government publications which they are entitled to send to people enquiring from them. It is not the personal opinion of anyone in the British Information Services which gives the authority for what I have sent concerning the tax problem. The British Information Services do not themselves feel entitled to express an opinion on these subjects, and they are not in any way to blame for any discrepancy between their and your or Clissold's view of law. I think that Clissold may find a way to beat the tax, since there must be some consideration for equity involved, however deeply Imbedded in the official mind."
He adds a typed postscript: "This morning, I received a letter from Shipley, Blackburn, Sutton & Co. that I cannot escape liability for the tax since, as you said, the Inland Revenue authorities cannot be actuated by sympathy. Sometime I hope to learn just what they are actuated by. I am sure Mr. Clissold will furnish you with a copy of this letter if you desire it." Double-matted and framed with a lobby card for The Blue Dahlia to an overall size of 21 x 29. In fine condition.
