German physicist (1879–1960) who won the 1914 Nobel Prize in Physics for his research related to the diffraction of X-rays by crystals. ALS in German, signed “M. v. Laue,” one page both sides, 5.5 x 8.5, February 21, 1949. Handwritten letter of sympathy to a recent widow, in full (translated): "My wife and I regretted to read the sad news about the passing of your husband. We still remember fondly the kindness he extended to us in meetings of the geographical community in Munich in those past days that we lived there. I also often remember the stories that Captain Drygalski told in 1918 in Fournier at the training course. I think one can add the time I spent with him more in hours than days, yet he remains unforgettable." In fine condition, with a trivial smudge to the signature, and minor repaired tear to the left edge.
