Prince of Prussia (1862–1929), the younger brother of Emperor Wilhelm II and a grandson of queen Victoria, who rose to the rank of Grand Admiral in the Imperial German Navy. Two ALSs, each signed "Henry of Prussia," four pages on two sheets, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, January 3, 1912, and May 28, 1914, both to Sir Edward Seymour.
The first, in part: "I hasten to thank you for yr. kind letter of the 29th, received here last night & most heartily reciprocate your wishes for the new year; it was the greatest interest to me to read the book of yr. life, especially the chapter about China in the years 98–01 & I can't help thinking, that you have been very fortunate in your career, having so often been on 'active service,' a chance, which has always escaped me. I wonder what the future of China will be, but am also convinced, that on the long run it can not be governed as a republic—The Manchu dynasty, as you know, is & was so weak during the last years, that I am not astonished the people even in China got tired of it.—I am afraid Japan will have still more influence in future, certainly not to the advantage of the Europeans."
The second, in part: "Needless to say it was a great disappointment to me, not to see you in London, where I stayed for three days, to attend the funeral service of the late Duke of Argyll, who had been great friends with my parents, & whom I was personally devoted to. The southern American republics are certainly developing, though their development is not due to the Latin race, but entirely due to the European influence, which is equally divided between England & Germany, & without which these southern states could not exist—The Brazilians as well as the Argentines are unable to exist by themselves. This little trip to South America has not interfered with my interest, I take in China, & I am much amused to see, that you think China is drifting back to the reestablishment of a monarchy, which after all is the only possible & natural development of that country!"
